Gaza power shut down due to fuel shortage

Middle East News.Net
Saturday 10th May, 2008

Officials in the Gaza Strip say they have shut down the territory's sole power plant in due to a shortage of fuel.

Some 800,000 people are without power.

An Israeli government spokesperson said the Nahal-Oz fuel terminal on the Israeli-Palestinian border is not operating at full capacity due to damage sustained during Palestinian rocket attacks and deliveries were temporarily suspended during the celebrations to mark the 60th anniversary of Israel.

Normal deliveries will resume on Sunday.

A spokesperson for Prime Minister Ehud Olmert accused Hamas of shutting down the Gaza power station in order to orchestrate an artificial crisis and fuel anti-Israeli sentiments.

Israel has cut off fuel supplies to the Hamas-run territory several times this year though, most recently after militants attacked the fuel depot and killed two Israeli civilians.
