Iran stops providing weapons to insurgents

Middle East News.Net
Wednesday 1st July, 2009

The top US military officer, Admiral Mike Mullen, has said the supply of weapons to Iraqi rebels by Iran has been cut down.

He said while Iranian interference is still having an effect on the conduct of the war, Iran is no longer shipping as many weapons as they used to.

In the past, US officials have accused Iran of supplying large amounts of weaponry, ammunition and bomb-making technology to Iraqi insurgents.

Mullen said Iran is still somewhat involved but there has been a change in policy.

He said: "There is a view that they are waiting for the American forces to leave. My view is they have a long view.”

The admiral also said he had not seen any indication of a broader change in Iran's military policy.

*Correction, August 7, 2008: Abu Laith al-Libi was a senior Al Qaeda commander, not a senior Taliban commander, as originally stated. That says it all.
